It was Catweasel who used this term; apt really. The claims of many manufacturers that ‘this blanket runs for 1p an hour’ or ‘cut your bills will a microwave snood’ felt unfounded. I believed I was being conned but following a lovely present I investigated further.

Traditionally I have access to the three main types of heater. Those above, plus a fan heater. To calculate what it costs simply look at the label. Most work at 2000w.
With the gift of an electric over blanket plus a voucher for the factory second shop (now bust) I achieved wrap around solutions for the sofa and below my beds (single/double).
After two months of practice my electricity bill has climbed from £30 to £40, not quite the panacea I was expecting.
The moral? A well insulated house; good quality heating and thermostats on each radiator work best.
Instead of an electric blanket use a hot water bottle. Or, stick your teddy in the microwave.

I also still have an oil heater. These smelly paraffin alternatives provide us with a solution when the electricity is cut; just like the three day week!
